Dave McGilton: Bio

Hi my name is Dave McGilton, I'm 48 years old and I've been a full time writer since I decided to make music/writing my number one priority in 1993.In the years since, I've concentrated on developing the craft of songwriting and writing in general and have focused on being a writer as opposed to performance.

I'm happiest in the background working on songs at home then taking the songs to a studio to collaborate with others in order to get the best possible outcome for the song. I've been fortunate to work with some great people on the recording side of things over the years in this regard, including Donagh Long,Cormac O'Connor,Padraig Parker,Dave Murphy,Noel Barrett and Donncha Moynihan here in Cork, all very talented people and very easy and positive to work with.

I've done some recording also up in Limerick with the very talented Dave Keary in Red Door Productions.Dave and myself have also collaborated on songs together arrangement and production wise.

Certain songs take on a life of their own and sometimes i'll try to get them to artists that I feel would connect with them and like them enough to record them.I've been fortunate in that regard to have some of my songs recorded by other artists,my first break coming in 1995 when Irish folk artist Frances Black recorded one of my songs called Falling Leaves.Frances has recorded another of my songs and other songs have been recorded by Daniel O'Donnell which led to some songs being released and heard in America which is hugely positive from a writing point of view as it's always been my intention to have my songs heard as far and wide as possible.

In July of last year a great and very dear friend of mine, Mary Courtney in New York, recorded and released a song of mine that's very close to my heart, a song called The Sky Belongs To Dreamers and Mary does an incredible version of it and sings it weekly at her gigs over there which is such an honour for me.

Mary has subsequently recorded and included another 3 of my songs on her live album "Live from Tir Na nOg" which was recorded in Tir na nOg Trenton New Jersey in Feb of this year, 2008.I was delighted to be there for the recording and it was some night to remember. It was a dream for me personally to finally get to America especially to see New York. Then,to be going there because some of my songs had been covered there was something I'd dreamt about for quite some time. Here's to more of it occuring in future. It's a great city and it was great also to get across to Jersey and meet all of Mary's crew!

The song The Sky Belongs To Dreamers also seems to have a life of its own because following a providential meeting in April 08 it's now with a publisher in Nashville along with half as dozen of my songs so fingers crossed something very positive will emerge from that.

This year also I was delighted and honoured when the Gardiner St Gospel Choir in Dublin included a song of mine called Where The Jordan Flows in their weekly mass and concerts and we're hoping to have a recording of that soon to be included on another project, more of which soon.

That's it for now, any other projects current and future will be included in the news/journal section on the site.

In closing the bio I guess all I can say really is that writing is my life, it's all I ever wanted to do ,I've been blessed in that its brought me into contact with incredible people from all walks of life here in Ireland and abroad and I'm constantly learning and being challenged and rewarded, in all the ways that count, by the people I meet and by the projects I undertake.I hope that continues for a long long time.

My sources of strength in life are my family, music, friends and nature, all give me strength in different ways and I just hope I stay focused on what matters in life and for me it's these four things, all of which you could "file" under Spirit. Thanks for visiting and for reading and stay safe and well whoever and wherever you are.
